Investing For 2030 And Beyond

Blog By Richard Male, Ufi Ventures Team. Wednesday 2nd October 2019.

Ufi Ventures invests in early-stage ventures that are developing technologies that help people and businesses build the skills they need for work in the future.

We will be looking to see the full potential of our investments realised in 10 years time and beyond. The question that arises is what will with life be like then? Will a combination of AI and robotics have replaced most of the monotonous, labour intensive activity in our economy? Will society and legal frameworks be able to derive value from the data sources that digital technologies have brought us whilst protecting us from potential harm? Will the technology giants of today still be the dominating forces in the global economy or will those giants still not have been born yet?

Back To The Future

One way of identifying and simulating what the future holds is looking back into the past 10 years.

Also, take a look at some products that didn’t exist before 2009:

  • iPad
  • Snapchat
  • Instagram
  • Kickstarter
  • Lyft
  • Pinterest
  • 4G
  • Uber
  • WhatsApp
  • Slack
  • Google Chrome (was 3 months old)

So what does this tell us about what the future holds? It’s difficult and I am not sure we can say with much confidence.

Within such a short space of time we have come to see mobile banking as commonplace. We no longer waste time having to go to a bank, we can transfer money, pay in cheques, and arrange loans within minutes.

Particularly thinking about vocational learning, we will probably expect high quality content delivered when and where we want, we will expect it be highly accessible, affordable, and relevant to our needs. It will enable us to be good at our chosen jobs and allow us to progress or change direction in our careers. There is of course caution to be noted - we have to ensure these technologies don’t widen the gap to accessibility and increase the divide. We must be mindful of how industry uses these technologies and ensure data driven models don’t ignore the human and soft skills needed of society.

Building For The Future

At Ufi we believe that VocTech (vocational technology ) will be indentifiable as a critical set of digitally-driven products and services that enable people to develop their skills for work, and companies to be more productive. Supporting people and businesses to adopt new technologies for the greater good will be core to society's successful, harmonious transition through to what many people term 'Industry 4.0'.

Collaboration To Success

Ufi is focused on the development of digital technologies that help us all obtain the vocational skills we need to get more out of our working lives. We don’t have the answers on what the future holds, but we wish to collaborate with organisations and individuals who can share our vision to create a world where vocational skills are celebrated and valued by all as the engine upon which the UK economy is built, and where development of those skills is made possible by the best technology solutions, providing easier access, greater opportunity, and better outcomes for all.

Please get in touch with Ufi Ventures if you want to contribute to our mission; whether you are looking to adopt digital technologies to support your workforce, have a business that is driving vocational learning through digital technology, or are an investor seeking to create value from this emerging market opportunity.
